Zumba for a great cause!

On March 24, more than 60 people from Southern Ontario came together to zumba and raise money for the construction of a daycare in Lima, Peru.

Nathalie Pageau, a teacher at Conseil Scolaire Viamonde, and Sarah Cowan, a student at Wilfrid Laurier University, organized the event to help Solidarity in Action (SIA) raise money to renovate “Los Ninos de Jesus” school.

In August of 2011, Nathalie, Sarah, and university students, faculty members and teachers from across Southern Ontario traveled to Lima with SIA. During their trip, participants were introduced to the daycare, located in the shantytown community of Pacifico de Villa, on the outskirts of Lima. The daycare, like the homes within the community, was made of pressboard. The space was no longer adequate for the increasing number of children attending the school. After spending two weeks in Lima, Nathalie, Sarah and the SIA volunteers vowed to help Pacifico de Villa raise money for much-needed renovations on the building.

Filled with upbeat music, plenty of dancing, and a wonderful group of energetic people, the event was a huge success.

The event far surpassed its fundraising goal of $450, bringing in more than $800, which was to be used to install the final windows of the first two classrooms in the daycare.

Through various fundraisers and the wonderful support of individual donors, Solidarity in Action has raised more than $6,000 of the $13,000 needed to build the daycare.
